Matt joined Mount Hermon in September 2024, led by God’s calling. He grew up blessed by the teaching and guidance of his grandfather, Dr. E. Wayne Thompson, who was both his pastor and mentor. At 21, Matt experienced a transformative moment of faith that led him into full-time ministry. Since then, he has served as a Youth Pastor, Christian school teacher, and Director of Rapidan Baptist Camp, where he worked alongside Pastor Steve Chromy. Before coming to MHBC, he spent 15 meaningful years as Pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Gretna, Virginia.
Matt has been married to his high school sweetheart, Ms. Sommer, for 32 years. Together, they are incredibly proud of their four sons: Cody, who serves as Youth Pastor at MHBC with his wife Casey; Jacob, an active-duty member of the U.S. Army, married to his wife Rachel; Caleb, a Production Supervisor at TRS Direct, married to Ariel; and Justin, the Associate Director of Residential Life at Liberty University. His daughters-in-law bring even more joy to the family and have blessed him with two wonderful grandchildren, Miles and Lily, and two cherished grand-dogs, Libby and Mac.
In his free time, Pastor Matt enjoys training Labrador Retrievers, duck hunting, and relaxing with a good nap.
